Privacy Policy for Palé

Palé (“we,” “our,” or “the app”) is a speech development companion for children ages 2–11. We take the privacy of your family seriously, especially because our app is designed for use with children. This privacy policy explains what data the app collects, how it is used, and your rights as a user.

1. Information We Collect

Information You Provide

Child’s first name — Used to personalize the app experience
Child’s age — Used to determine the appropriate practice mode and session length
Parent-selected concerns — Selected during onboarding to guide the app experience

Information Generated During Use

Speech recordings — Audio captured when your child practices words during assessment and practice sessions
Assessment results — Phoneme-level accuracy scores from the initial sound check
Practice history — Dates, accuracy scores, and session details from daily practice
Phoneme progress — Per-sound accuracy tracking and developmental stage
Detected speech patterns — Phonological patterns identified through assessment analysis

2. How Your Data Is Stored

All personal data is stored locally on your device. We do not operate servers that collect, store, or sync your data. Your child’s profile, assessment results, practice history, and progress are saved exclusively on your device using local storage.

We do not require an account, email address, or login to use the app.

3. Audio Data and Third-Party Processing

When your child records speech during assessment or practice sessions, the audio is temporarily sent to Microsoft Azure Speech Services for phoneme-level pronunciation analysis. This is the only data transmitted from the app.

What is sent: The audio recording and the target word being practiced
Purpose: To analyze pronunciation accuracy at the individual sound level
Data retention: Audio is processed in real time and is not stored by Palé. Microsoft Azure processes the audio in accordance with their own privacy policies and data processing terms.

No audio recordings are stored on our servers because we do not operate any servers.

4. Children’s Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

Palé is designed for use by parents with their children. We are committed to complying with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):

We do not collect personal information from children beyond what is described in this policy
We do not require children to provide personal information to use the app
A parent or guardian is expected to set up and supervise the app experience
We do not serve advertisements of any kind
We do not use analytics or tracking services
We do not sell, share, or rent any user data to third parties

5. Permissions

Microphone

The app requests microphone access to record your child’s speech during practice and assessment sessions. This permission is required for the core functionality of the app. You can deny this permission, but speech analysis features will not function without it.

Notifications (Optional)

If enabled in Settings, the app sends local daily practice reminders at a time you choose. These notifications are generated entirely on your device and do not involve any external service. You can disable notifications at any time in Settings.

6. Data Sharing

We do not share your data with any third parties except as described in Section 3 (audio processing via Microsoft Azure Speech Services).

We do not:

Sell your data
Use your data for advertising
Share your data with data brokers
Use analytics or tracking SDKs

7. Your Rights and Choices

Access your data: All data is stored on your device and visible within the app (Progress tab, Settings)
Delete your data: You can delete all data at any time using the “Reset All Data” option in Settings. This action is permanent and cannot be undone.
Control permissions: You can revoke microphone or notification permissions at any time through your device’s Settings app.

8. Data Security

Your data is stored locally on your device using standard device storage mechanisms. We recommend keeping your device secured with a passcode or biometric lock to protect all locally stored data.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
